Watching my grandfather attach a Falls City beer can to a Jaw Harp, to remedy his lack of teeth that were needed to play the instrument, changed my life forever.I seem to have a certain aesthetic in my work that has found a home among folk artists. I find a beautiful mystery in how two pieces of junk fit perfectly together.
My grandfather, mother, and father have been particularly influential. The beautiful way that they would fix and make things out of plastic bleach bottles and tin cans. I once watched my father spend an entire summer Saturday repairing a leg on some patio recliner. He used wire, coke cans, 10 screws, twine, more wire, and a lot of glue. In the time that he spent on making this "support" system, he could’ve cut out 6 new legs outta wood. But the clever ways of repair, bracing and experimentation with different materials and their properties become the project. Besides, "This leg still has some life in it."
