Todd Dockery
I think of Folk Art as a broad label that defines artwork made from pure sensibility to express one’s self honestly, without regard to fashionable trends, be they academic or commercial in nature. I don’t attach narrow parameters to the term such as geographic source, age, or apparent education (or lack there of). When I view creative work which strikes me as existing primarily from the force of the artist’s irrepressible need to "make it happen" no matter what the ramifications, socially or politically, I think of that as Folk Art. This applies to music and literature as well.
I don’t think of direct classifications [such as folk art] for my work. It’s pen on paper. I do it out of a wondrous compulsion and for the age-old human pursuits of transcendence, awareness, and freedom for the soul. If this makes me a Folk Artist, then so be it.
