Rolfe Horn: Oakland, California
Rolfe Horn was born in Northern California in 1971. His fascination with photography began as a child when he used his father's camera to capture memories of hikes around the trails of the East Bay and Lake Tahoe. When he was 15, he built his first darkroom. Horn studied photography independently for several years prior to entering Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California, in 1993. While a student at Brooks Institute, he studied with photographer Nick Decker, who introduced him to alternative processes and pushed him to create powerful images. Rolfe received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Brooks Institute of Photography in the fall of 1996, when he graduated with honors. While a student at Brooks Institute, he received multiple awards for his black and white photographs of the California landscape. Currently, Horn is an assistant to photographer Michael Kenna. He continues to live and work as an artist in the San Francisco Bay area. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions since 1989, and is held in many private collections. "The darkroom is a place of magic; it is the final step where the latent image in my mind is realized by utilizing the raw information of the negative. It is there that I shape that information into the visualization of my feelings and emotions." |
