In-School Partnerships ********************************************** Black Mountain Elementary School Artists Shayne Hull and Wayne Ferguson traveled to Kenbire Kentucky to conduct a two day ceramic workshop with Black Mountain Elementary School. The fifth grade students who participated in the workshop were very excited to have an opportunity to work with clay. Assisted by Shayne and Wayne the students made whimsical clay figurines. The entire school was invited to an assembly held by Mr. Laughing. During his presentation he taught the students about Native American culture and Kentucky's first folk art. Fourth and Fifth grade students meet with Mr. Laughing for three sessions and each created a unique carved walking stick. Every year we conduct art and craft workshops for each and every student in the school. Each fall and spring season, a total of 20 classes hop on the bus to take a field trip to the KACF Education Center in order to tour the current exhibition and participate in our Thematic Hands-on Workshops Series. The day starts out with an interactive tour which presents ideas about art, focusing on techniques, concepts, and materials. Following the tour, students move to the workshop facility and create a piece of art which thematically relates to what they just saw in the exhibition. Click here to see the Fall Workshop pictures. The main content revolves around groups of students choosing a historical event occurring in the United States to illustrate with clay figures in a displayable painted shadow box context. The clay figures are self-portraits, but will be dressed like people in the historical event. The shadow boxes are affixed to a designated hall wall and then they were filmed. In the filming process, the students did voice-overs describing the historical events from the students standpoints from that periods. They performed this narrative conversation from scripts written with coaching from Wayne during his residency. Each year, we send four of our artists to conduct art classes as part of Engelhard’s Enrichment Monday Program. This program provides children the opportunity to sign up for non-traditional classes like karate, ballet, violin, and specific visual art disciplines. KMS's art teacher Kerri Dixon called KACF's Director of Education, Shayne Hull to express how much she enjoyed the KACF/Wayne Ferguson mural recently completed at her daughters school. She asked if KACF could organize a similar project for her art students. In only a matter of weeks the project was underway! Click here to see pictures of Kammerer
********************************************** Kennedy Metro Middle School KACF's Shayne Hull conducted a two-day painting project with ten seventh and eighth grade students at Kennedy Metro School. Art teacher Janet Linde prepared the students for Shayne's visit by photographing the students faces. On the first day Shayne talked with the students about likeness, painting, composition, content and context. He then had them sketch out their likeness on 12" x 12" panels. On the second day the students were instructed to paint their self-portraits in any style and any color scheme they wished. Each student will work with Shayne to create a painted self portrait, and with Wayne to create a bust. Shayne will have students painting a large-scale group portrait based on photographs that the students provide. Each participating student will receive a 12"x12" panel to paint on. KACF will provide a photographic projector to enlarge images on to the panels. Students will then trace key features of their face, followed by a brief demonstration of painting techniques, composition, and color mixing. Once complete the panels will be displayed together in the school. Wayne will work with students to create a ceramic portrait of themselves. A few of the past projects include tile murals and fiber arts. For this year, KACF has chosen artist Tammy Burke to work with students on a mural painting. This project will take place in the Fall of 2001. In August and September, KACF Education staff Dane Waters and Tammy met with Ms. Frances to flesh out a design for the front hallway wall. Themes of learning, exploration pride, using individual statements, and the American flag were decided upon. Because the ceramic tiles on the wall prohibit being directly painted upon, Lucan cut outs will be used and then bolted to the wall. Click here to see Maryhurst pictures. ********************************************** Ponderosa Elementary School This year the fifth grade students at Ponderosa Elementary School in Ashland took part in KACF's "Symbols, Emblems of Our Culture and Ourselves." Students created their own emblem that was carved into "easy-cut" to create a stamp. The stamp was printed several times on fabric using geometric rotations. Each rotation created a different pattern. This project was based on the Adinkra cloth made by the Asante people of Ghana Africa. Students also compared and contrasted Adinkra cloth and symbols to Kentucky quilts. Click here to see their finished work! ********************************************** Tates Creek High School Tates Creek High School Art Department has Artist in Resident, Wayne Ferguson for the fall 2001 semester. The ceramic classes of Janet Wozniak worked with ceramicist Ferguson on traditional Pueblo Pots and Meso-American Pots. Each student constructed a vessel based on traditional ceramic forms from these cultures as well as making stamps to use on their ware. Mr. Ferguson is constructed two extremely large vessels that the students are adding self-portraits to later this month. These two vessels have been fired and donated to the school and placed on display in the Media Center. During his visits, Ferguson assisted in instructing the students in ceramic construction as well as making different ceramic items to demonstrate techniques. While he is at Tates Creek he will assisted in the Emergency Bowl Relief that Tates Creek High is completing with UK Ceramic Department. Both ceramic studios have been constructing pots for sate at the November Gallery Hop in Lexington with several galleries. Profits will go toward the New York Relief effort of the Red Cross.
